Blue-green algae is a simple aquatic plant that grows naturally in rivers, lakes, wetlands, tree trunks and hot springs. When the number of algae cells increases to a certain level, the bloom of the plant can discolor river and lake water, form scum, produce unpleasant odors, make shellfish and fish unable to survive and seriously lower the water quality.
In the summer of 2007, nutrient runoff and other pollutants caused blue-green algae to bloom in Taihu, Chaohu and Dianchi lakes, endangering water supplies for nearby cities and threatening aquatic life in these lakes.
Taihu, the country’s third largest freshwater lake, swathe worst algae outbreak in its eastern part. This makes tap water undrinkable for more than 1 million local residents for about 10 days. The local environmental protection authorities shut down 770 chemical plants around the lake to curb the pollution.
In the summer of 2008, due to a long spell of warm, dry weather, blue-green algae broke out again in some lakes. In September, a blue-green algae-clearing vessel was put into use in Jiangsu Province. It can effectively eliminate the plant in a short period of time.
