流行性乙型脑炎（简称乙脑）的病原体于1934年在日本发现，故名日本乙型脑炎。1939年我国科学家分离到乙脑病毒，解放后进行了大量调查研究工作，改名为流行性乙型脑炎。本病主要分布在亚洲远东和东南亚地区，经蚊传播，多见于夏秋季。临床上急起发病，有高热、意识障碍、惊厥、强直性痉挛和脑膜刺激征等，重型患者病后往往留有后遗症，属于血液传染病。
